The World Happiness Report has used a wide variety of data including the Gallup World Poll in order to determine which countries are happiest, or as the report says “average national life evaluations.” Here are the happiest countries in the world according to the World Happiness Report.
Finland
Finland is at the top of the list of happy countries despite its long, cold, and dark winters. With a score of 7.889, Finland is the shining example to the rest of the world of what a happy country looks like. It scored high when it came to social support, freedom, high life expectancy, and perceptions of corruption and dystopia. Finnish inhabitants have access to water, wilderness, national parks, reindeer, and of course, the Northern Lights.
Iceland
Iceland, a Nordic island nation, is full of lovely landscapes chock full of hot springs, geysers, coastal waterfalls, and volcanoes. It’s a popular tourist destination, but is clearly a fantastic place to live as it came in second place of happiest countries in the world.
Denmark
Denmark nestles between Scandinavian neighbors Norway and Sweden and mainland Europe. The water-rich Denmark has many islands, gorgeous capital city Copenhagen, and Nyhavn harbor. While in 2020 Denmark came in second place, it still is firmly in the top 5, taking in third place for happiest countries in the world.
Switzerland
Switzerland breaks the winning streak of Scandinavian countries, taking fourth place in happiest countries in the world. Tucked between Italy, Austria, Germany, and France, it is home to beautiful alpine villages, ski resorts, stunning lakes, hiking trails, and world renowned chocolate and watch industries. Switzerland boasts a high GDP, which gives its residents strong financial security.
Netherlands
This northwestern coastal European country is popular with tourists. Amsterdam, its capital city, is home to bike-friendly streets lined with canals, museums, and legal marijuana sold at coffee shops. The gorgeous nature that the Netherlands has to offer helps it round out the top five happiest countries in the world.
