Apart from people participating and having a strong sense of community, burners have their own lingo. They call the land “The Paya,” which actually means beach in Spanish. All new attendees are encouraged to fully immerse themselves in the experience and learn the lingo.

In 1986 co-founder, Larry Harvey built a 9-foot wooden sculpture of a man and at the end of the summer, he and his friends burnt it on a beach in San Francisco. This became a tradition they continued year after year and that’s how the show began.
